How to dress like a gentleman- A guide on the style of the umbrella used by the gentleman.
STYLE
An umbrella is another of those ineffable expressions of character. It used to be said that robbers
never carry umbrellas, and while this would be hard to vouch for any more (indeed, a poison-tipped
umbrella was employed in a London street assassination not so long ago), the measure of dignity
conferred upon one by a superior, hand-tooled umbrella cannot be over-estimated.
The choice of handle is most important. There are handles which have been mounted on
successive frames, but better to purchase a truly superior umbrella in the first instance, and to have
the frame recovered when necessary. Such an umbrella will last a lifetime and acquire a personality
of its own.
The nature of the umbrella has prevented any drastic changes in style, though the handle has
afforded opportunities for individualism. The curved , so-called ‘crooked’ handle has dominated
down the years, while there have always been some gentlemen whose preference was for a handle
set at right angles to the shaft, and some who have favoured a shorter handle with a knob.
Rosewood, Malacca, bamboo, silver and gold have led in handle-ware, with a menagerie of ducks’,
dogs’ and horses’ heads fashioned on quirkier examples. Ivory was once common, but , for
understandable reasons, no more.
A natural handle is classic, though a metal shaft permits more slender rolling. The golden rule – the
more formal the occasion, the darker the cloth-also applies to umbrellas. The black umbrella can be
carried on business as on formal evening occasions. Brightly-coloured umbrellas are for sports and
leisure pursuits.
Umbrellas come in several lengths. One must select that which one is most comfortable with. The
handle needs to be comfortable to grip in an ‘up’ position.
Golf umbrellas are useful not only on the golf course. The shaft is usually of light metal. The handle
may be curved or straight.
Travel umbrellas need not be of the grosser kind. There are superb designs, such as the Malacca-
wood and silver-banded ‘Prince of Wales’, which unscrew at the handle and tip for disassembly and
easy transportation.
UMBRELLA SILK
This is a very closely woven nylon, which is especially water-resistant and hardy.
NATURAL SILK
A finished, water-resistant yarn is woven with four warp yarns and two weft yarns and rolled to
create the watery appearance known as moiré. The fabric swells upon absorbing moisture to
become extremely water-repellent.
