The hand-made umbrella is a connoisseur’s delight, its pedigree apparent to the discerning eye in
dozens of subtle details. Sturdiness is of paramount importance, and all elements are manufactured
and assembled with that in mind.
The handle is steamed and bent by hand, the process spread over several days to stabilize the
form. Fitting shaft and handle together is craftsman’s work of a high order, as are the insertion of
the hand-filed runner and metal spokes, and the complex frame assembly. The eight segments of
the canopy are cut and sewn by hand with yarn of high tensile strength. Securing canopy and frame
is fastidious, exacting work.
A final touch are the ornamental fittings, usually of sterling silver or gilt brass and gold.
