How to dress like a gentleman- A guide on the style of tie worn by the true gentleman
STYLE

It has been said of the tie that it is the flag we hoist to signal who we are: that it expresses, just as it
gives away, more than any other element of dress. Hence the agony of indecision with which
selection is so often associated.

A little planning is in order. Gentlemen have a regrettable tendency to collect ties, old ties being like
old teddy bears and not to be abandoned. Far better to have and to care for a select few of top-
quality,  hand-finished. They should include plain and patterned silks in a careful choice of rich
shades, and traditional ‘regimental’ stripes if you will, though no gentleman should fly under false
colours: the book of public school, old boys, University, Navy, Army, Air Force & Club Ties  lists and
illustrates 749 of the more distinguished !

Avoid ties that clamour for attention. The tie must not be allowed to dominate; nor dare it be a
shrinking violet, fading in the face of the shirt. Rather, it must provide a focus for the entire
ensemble – the top note in a harmonized symphony. It must there-fore be chosen with particularly
careful regard b to the shirt.

A silk neck-scarf or cravat provides a touch of romance and elegant flamboyance and is a
recommended addition
