FIT

Socks come in four lengths: short (15 cm), ankle (29 cm), calf (38 cm) and knee socks (more than
50 cm). There is an international standard for sock sizes, unlike the confusion attending shoe sizes.

For the right fit, calf-width as well as length of the foot has to be taken into account. A wide calf
requires a larger-sized sock. It is also important to be aware that after a couple of washings, shocks
shrink by half a size.

Short socks are for relaxing in, only. At all other times, the sock must be of sufficient height to
maintain serenity between trouser and shoe. The danger is at its height when relaxing cross-
legged: there must no risk of a glimpse of naked flesh

MANUFACTURE
All stockings in the early years of the 20th century were manufactured with ribbed tops and held up
with suspenders. Styles were conservative. Winter stockings were made of wool, and those for the
rest of the year were of silk or lisle, a fine-quality cotton made from tightly-twisted, long staple yarn
that has been given a sheen.

Patterned socks were rare until new machinery in the 1930s facilitated the knitting of one colour
over another and the blending of colour. Elastic tops that did away with the need for suspenders
also began to be a factor at this time, initially with socks that reached just below the knee.

Blends featuring man-made fibres as strengtheners for heel and toes were a big factor by the
1970s.

Socks are manufactured fully-fashioned in a ‘tubular’ all-in-one knitting process, from upper
elasticated end to the top of the toe, which is left open to be finished by manual ‘linking’ in the case
of quality hosiery. Also quite distinct from cheap ‘unisize’ products, quality hosiery is manufactured
on forming cylinders to various widths and lengths. They are then drawn damp over heated forms
and individually inspected.
