
MATERIAL
BOX CALF
A robust black leather produced from the skins of calves (under 12 months) and used mainly for
uppers. The best skins are reputed to come from beasts raised in the Alps. The same leather in
brown is known as Willow Calf.
BUCKSKIN
Soft, pliable and durable leather of deer or elk with a distinctive grain.
CHROME LEATHER
Leather which has been tanned using salts of the metal chromium. A subsequent soap-and-oil
treatment makes it very supple. Mainly used for uppers.
CORDOVAN
A rich, pliable leather made from the inner hide of the rump of a horse. It is tanned with vegetable
substances and is non-porous. The name derives from Cordoba, Spain, which was famous for its
leather in the early Middle Ages.
PATENT LEATHER
Cow, calf, kid or horsehide brought to a hard, lustrous finish by repeated applications of a thick
lacquer, prolonged heat and rubbing with pumice.
SUEDE
The inner side of a tanned hide, buffed to give a fine nap effect. The name comes from the country
first identified with is, Sweden.
FRENCH CALF
Waxed calf leather with a smooth, dull gloss. It is a feature of some quality shoes.
EXOTIC LEATHERS
The hide or skin of any animal, reptile, bird or fish can be turned into leather. Some remarkable
leathers come from creatures as diverse as snakes and lizards, ostriches, crocodiles, sharks and
carp, rhino and elephants.
