STYLE
The niceties of so much technology, not to mention the significance of all the technical terms, are
beyond the grasp of the layman, who must therefore trust in his instincts, and the certainty of his
touch. Rest assured that a skin can be judged by its ‘feel’: the softer and more supple that feel, the
better it is.

Most leather clothing is made from sheepskin,  althought  many other skin types are also used.
Cowhide is the least expensive. Lambskin can be costly, but rewards with its supple softness.

The gentleman, ever vigilant for errors of taste in other areas, must pay keenest attention when it
comes to the consideration of leather wear. Leather it too louche a material to take risks with. It has
no place in the formal wardrobe and yet it offers opportunities for casual elegance, indeed
splendour,  that should not to be denied. Just like a pair of bespoke shoes, a fine leather garment
may be expected to gain in character with age.

Simplicity, both in cut and line, must be one’s watchword. Avoid all flourish, fringe, or fussy detail.
Cleave rather to a jacket of classic simplicity, straight draped to mid-hip, or to an equally simple
blouson.

COWHIDE
Cattle leather is very robust. It is used for shoes, belts and some outer clothing.

CAPE (CAPESKIN)
Soft,  fine-grain leather from haired (as distinct from woolly) sheep. The name derives from the
original source in South Africa.

LAMBSKIN
Leather from sheep is particularly pliable.

MOCHA
Fine sueded sheepskin used primarily in glovemaking.

KID
Soft leather made from goatskin. It can be tanned to a silky quality, wears well and is resistant to
tearing. Much of it is made into suede. Kid leather produced from a young goat has a particularly
close-textured grain and is thin enough for use as gloves.

ELK
Scratches and scars are natural to this product of the wild.

PECCARY
Also known as Hogskin. Peccary is made from a South American wild boar. It is very soft, pliable and
air-permeable. Characteristically it bears the thorn and battle-scars of its previous owner. Imitation
peccary is made from sheep and other skins. It is embossed with little holes that fake the real thing.

BUCKSKIN
A soft-napped deer leather used for coats and blousons. Its gentle texture makes this a ‘cashmere’
among leathers.

REINDEER CALF
The leather of the Scandinavian reindeer calf is soft as a glove and light. In spite of its fineness
(Only 0.6 to 037 mm thick) it has great tensile strength, which makes it suitable for outerwear of
superior quality.

LEATHER GOODS
This term is applied to plastics and other synthetic materials used as leather substitutes. They lack
leather’s unique combination of qualities, but have a large share of the market, particularly in shoe
soles.
