MANUFACTURE
Bales of raw cotton are washed, shaken out, combed, then spun and woven. The material is
finished by singeing off loose fibres to produce a silky effect. Washing the bales in caustic soda
(mercerising) makes the cotton lustrous and durable.
The cloth lengths are dyed and cut to size.
High-quality handkerchiefs are hand-rolled, i.e. the borders are turned and finished with fine
stitches. The hand-stitched rolled border is the sign to look for. It is not to be confused with a
machined border product.
